【2026 HFU Reflective Life Design Week】Special International Course: Color and Visual Semiotics for Design

Discover the Language of Color — An Interdisciplinary Learning Experience for Every Student

Five Days | Two Credits | 36 Hours | November 9–13, 2026

Color is everywhere. It shapes the spaces we inhabit, the images we encounter, the products we choose, the messages we trust, and even the emotions we experience.

But have you ever wondered how color communicates meaning? Why do certain colors evoke particular emotions? How do visual elements influence our perception, interpretation, and understanding of the world?

Color is more than an artistic or design element. Understanding color is an essential form of visual literacy that connects art, science, psychology, culture, communication, and everyday life.

As part of 2026 HFU Reflective Life Design Week, Huafan University is pleased to welcome Professor Dr. José L. Caivano, former President of the International Colour Association (AIC), to offer a special five-day interdisciplinary course:

Color and Visual Semiotics for Design

This unique course invites students from all academic disciplines to explore the fascinating relationships among color, light, perception, design, and visual meaning.

Through theoretical discussions, practical exercises, artistic projects, and research-based activities, students will discover how visual signs and color systems communicate ideas, shape experiences, and influence human understanding.

Course Topics

The course covers seven major themes:

  1. Visual Signs — Understanding how visual elements function as signs and communicate meaning.

  2. Color and Semiotics — Exploring the relationships between color, symbolism, interpretation, and visual communication.

  3. Color Order Systems — Examining the principles and structures used to organize and classify colors.

  4. Color Combinations — Investigating how colors interact and create different visual effects.

  5. Synesthesia — Exploring relationships between color perception and other sensory experiences.

  6. Color and Space — Understanding how color influences spatial perception and environmental experience.

  7. Cesia: Transparency, Translucency, Gloss, and More — Investigating visual appearance, light interaction, and material perception.

Why This Course Is for Every Student

You do not need to be an art or design major to appreciate the power of color.

This course is particularly valuable for students interested in design, fine arts, architecture, photography, media, business, marketing, psychology, education, cultural studies, technology, and related disciplines.

Whether you create visual work, communicate with audiences, develop products, study human behavior, or simply wish to understand the visual world more deeply, this course offers new perspectives and opportunities for interdisciplinary exploration.

No prior background in art or design is required. Curiosity is all you need.

(Color and Visual Semiotics for Design)
